What is Coaching?

The common definition of coaching is a technique used to help someone solve their own problems, rather than solving someone’s problems for them. It helps someone discover new skills from within themselves using non-directive ‘pull’ techniques. Coaching:

“effectively unlocks people’s potential to maximise their own performance

Tim Gallwey

Is it different to mentoring?

Yes it is! Mentoring takes a more directive approach, whereby the mentor will tell the mentee what they should try to do to change things.

How quickly can I change using coaching?

This depends on if you are ready to change. If you aren’t willing or ready to change, then the process will ultimately get stuck. If you are ready to change, and willing to work to change, then the rewards will come when they are ready.

What is behavioural analysis?

There are several behavioural tools I use, for example:

DiSC is an acronym and simply put, the letters D, i, S and C stand for the four DiSC behavioural styles : D – Dominance; i – Influence; S – Steadiness C- Conscientiousness. Carrying out a DISC profile on someone helps me determine their behavioural style in a number of different scenarios, such as how they respond too challenges, how they influence others, their preferred way and pace of learning, and how they respond to rules and processes.

The Behavioural Drivers Questionnaire examines the repeatable and automatic behaviour patterns that the coachee displays during stressful or anxious situations. This helps the coachee understand how they react during these times. These behaviours can then hopefully be modified if they are deemed ‘negative’ or unhelpful.

Johari Window is a technique that aims to help people understand their emotional and physical relationship with self and other people. It is used in both a self-help context, group setting and in the corporate environment to improve individual and team performance.
